Mobile Subscriptions in Kenya Grow Past 60 Million for the First Time
Mobile subscriptions in Kenya have continued to grow quarter by quarter, majorly attributed to multi-SIM registration.
In the three months to December 31, 2020, the number of total mobile subscriptions surpassed 60 million for the first time, the latest report from industry regulator Communications Authority of Kenya, CA, shows.
According to the latest sector statistics report, the total number of subscriptions stood at 61.4 million. It’s the first quarter the number of mobile subscriptions has surpassed 60 million.
Additionally, it’s also the first time the CA added Jamii Telecommunications Ltd to the report’s mobile subscriptions section.
There were 1.6 million net additions during the period under review, a 2.6 percent increase from the September quarter.
However, the number of net additions declined significantly compared to the 2.8 million registered during the prior quarter. With the latest figures, mobile penetration has also increased by 3.3 percentage points to 129.1 percent.
Safaricom’s number of active mobile subscriptions increased to 39.1 million from 38.1. Airtel Kenya’s numbers grew 2.5 percent, the highest in the quarter, to 16.7 million. Telkom Kenya and Equitel also grew their active mobile subscriptions by 1.5 and 0.8 percent to 3.8 and 1.7 percent, respectively.
On the other hand, JTL had slightly above 160, 000 mobile subscriptions.
Safaricom wrapped 2020, maintaining a majority share in Kenya’s mobile subscription market. Airtel Kenya is third, followed by Telkom Kenya, Equitel, and JTL.
