Netflix is Adding an Audio-Only Mode

Can you listen to your Favorite Shows without video? Netflix is adding an audio-only mode

Listening to podcasts or audiobooks on your favorite device is all well and good but listening to your favorite TV shows? That’s absurd. However, that’s exactly what Netflix wants you to do — if that’s fine with you.

The streaming giant wants to give its subscribers more options when catching up on the latest episode of their favorite TV Show. Apparently, there’s a high demand for the feature, so Netflix will deliver – and is doing so already.

Soon, you’ll see an audio-only mode so you can listen to your favorite movie as if it was a podcast. When the feature becomes available, you’ll be able to see a new “video off” at the top of the full-screen video player.

The option allows you to turn the video on or off as you wish. Turning the video off will give you a blank screen with all the platform’s playback controls – speed, scrub bar, forward, brightness, and more.

Furthermore, there’s a new Audio Only option in the Setting section of the app.

It’s no secret podcasts and audiobooks are increasingly gaining popularity. While the market is still small, there’s massive growth potential. Deloitte says the audiobook and podcasting markets are growing far faster than the overall media and entertainment market.

So maybe… just maybe Netflix is also hoping to have a share of this. But audio-only can be helpful, if you think about it, in those situations where you can’t get your eyeballs on the screen at all the time.

Other companies are investing heavily in the audio industry. Spotify has splurged cash into the division to bring the best podcasters it can get in the industry.

And it’s no coincidence that Twitter has started allowing users to post audio-only broadcasts. YouTube is also experimenting with audio-only ads to help brands expand reach and increase awareness.

Netflix’s audio-only mode is currently available for a few users on the Android version of the app.
