Google’s internet project Loon has been laying its ground in Kenya for sometime now. Back in February Project Loon in partnership with Telkom Kenya made its presence known in Nyeri Kenya after setting up an additional ground station in addition to other stations in Nakuru and Nairobi.
Google Loon mission is to provide internet access to underserved regions by making use of already set up infrastructure on nearby locations.
A ground station can send its signal to a balloon as far as 20KM. The balloons thus act as a cheaper way to power areas off the internet grid than building infrastructure from the bottom.
The Loon Project commercial testing will begin later this year as the equipment makes its way to the target site in the coming weeks. The trial will see Telkom Kenya provide internet access to customers in mountainous areas via the balloons while leveraging the set ground stations.
Kenya’s Aviation Authority already stated that the Loon project approval will be signed this month. The commercial trial in Kenya is under supervision from other carriers in other countries as well who haven’t trusted the reliability, safety, and profitability of Loon to carriers
