If you bought a new phone in 2018, it’s likely that a good camera ranked high on your list of must-have features. Camera phones have been a real game changer not just for updating your social media accounts but also producing professional shots and video footage of really high standard
But how do you know if the camera on a phone is good or just ok?
Well, the TECNO Camon series has been known for its cameras, especially selfie cameras. Every year, the company has been working hard to try improve the cameras on every phone it launches in this series, and that was the case with the recently unveiled TECNO Camon 11 and Camon 11 PRO.
The TECNO Camon 11 duo utilizes improved AI technology for selfie photography in addition to many more AI-powered operational features. This is one of the features I have been trying to check out while interacting with the Camon 11 over the last few weeks.
During the launch, TECNO’s Marketing Manager said “The revolutionary AI technology embedded in Camon 11 Pro and Camon 11’s camera will elevate the smartphone selfie entirely. ‘’
‘’Selfie-lovers will enjoy the high-end 24 or 16-megapixel front camera, which has advanced with intelligent features based on artificial intelligence. AI-technology smartly allows to create high-quality self-portraits with natural skin colour and optimize the image, achieving brighter colours and sharp contours.” he added.
So how do these camera’s perform?
The 16 Megapixels front camera on the Camon 11 does a great job. This is a selfie-focused phone and of course, TECNO had to make sure it gets things right. The images are clear, detailed and the colours are also amazing. Being AI-powered camera, I expected it to recognizes my environment and chooses the best possible setting for a quality shot. Well, as much as the shots are great, I never saw the camera recognize the landscape, building etc like I saw on on the Huawei Y9 (2019) for example. Maybe TECNO is working on update for that, I don’t know or maybe the Pro version of this device does that, that again I don’t know since I have not interacted with the device yet.
The selfie camera has additional features like beauty mode, portrait and even wideselfie to accommodate so many people in one selfie. Beauty mode, as expected somehow smoothens your skin, while the portrait mode, despite being in some instances blurs part of the subject like your ears and hair.
See sample selfie images in below to tell the difference, more images are available on our Instagram page.
The rear camera, on the other hand, is a 13MP normal sensor plus a 2MP depth sensor for portraits and also does an incredible job. The shots are actually really impressive especially with good lighting. The camera also has an AI feature, there’s beauty mode, Bokeh and panorama.
Again you have to be steady when taking your shots so that your images don’t appear messy. I also need to mention you don’t have manual controls for the rear camera on the Camon 11.
TECNO also made the AI as the default mode, of course, you can change this to all the other available modes I mentioned earlier. See sample images in the slide below.
TECNO is really pushing the AI agenda on the Camon 11. It says the technology advances include more accurate facial recognition capability. The phone’s cameras are able to improve self-portraits with the help of AI Beauty by recognizing up to 240 points on the face of the subject; delivering better beautification effects for gender and age; and the self-learning capabilities based on user preferences plus added fun features.
Well, if you already got yourself a TECNO Camon 11, what are your thoughts on the Camera? Leave us a comment in the comment section below.
