Safaricom Named in Fortune’s 2020 “Change the World List”


FORTUNE has released its Sixth Annual “Change the World List,” which names the most impactful companies through their operations in the past year. 2020’s list includes a total of 52 companies in different sectors recognized for innovative business strategies that positively impact the world.

Safaricom emerged seventh for M-TIBA, a mobile health wallet that allows users to send, save, and receive funds to access healthcare services using their mobile phones.

M-TIBA funds can be used to pay for medical treatment at partner facilities. It was launched in partnership with CarePay and PharmAccess, allowing customers to deposit as low as KSHs. 10.

Speaking of the recognition, Safaricom’s CEO said, “We are honoured to be included in this global list that recognises companies that are using their products and services to provide sustainable, shared value solutions to the communities they serve.”

“M-TIBA has shown how, through partnerships, we can use the mobile phone to drive healthcare inclusion for millions of people.”

Launched in July 2016, M-TIBA currently has over 4 million users. The service has also won two other awards, including the Sustainable Development award from FT/IFC Transformational Business in 2017 and a Shared Value Gold Award from Loeries Awards in the same year.

From the total of 52 companies named, 28 are from the U.S. and Canada; 10 from Asia and the Middle East; 8 from Europe; and 3 each from Africa and Latin America.
