Nokia Achieves Blazing Fast 8 Gbps Speeds on 5G, Setting New Record

Achieved using two Qualcomm smartphone form factor test devices peaking at 4 Gbps each


Finish tech company Nokia has set a new speed record on 5G. The company announced that it achieved to deliver 8 Gbps for the first time a commercial network in its home country using the 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum.

The company achieved the new 8 Gbps 5G speed record by combining two Qualcomm smartphone form factor test devices powered by the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System. Each device achieved 4 Gbps peak speeds from the base station.

The base station leveraged Nokia’s two AirScale radios, each using 800 MHz of commercial millimeter-wave 5G spectrum.

The Finish company tested the speeds on a local ISP, Elisa, and the results were showcased at Elisa’s flagship store in Helsinki, Finland.

The company says faster speeds will be useful in services that require high bandwidth and low latency like high-speed video downloads, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) applications.

The implementation will be launched in 2021.

Sami Komulainen, Executive Vice President, Production at Elisa, said, “This is an important development and another step in our efforts to bring the fastest speeds and best 5G experiences to our customers.”

“Reaching 8Gbps is a natural step in our 5G development and we want to explore the possibilities 5G offers and push the technology further to benefit our customers.”

5G adoption is yet low in the world and Africa. In Kenya, Safaricom had plans to launch a 5G network powered by Huawei before the year closes. With less than 40 days to go, it remains to be seen.
