KFCB is Asking Local Content Creators to Submit Comments on Self-Regulatory Framework

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has urged creatives in the country to submit proposals and comments to help draft a self-regulatory framework for the film industry.

Acting KFCB CEO Christopher Wambua said the contributions will go a long way in improving the fast-growing industry and making it more competitive within the region. Content creators have until September 13 to give their input.

The industry regulator issued a content rating guideline in March, aiming to build a better self-regulated environment for creators and broadcasters.

The guidelines seek to incorporate broadcasters and online streaming services in the examination and rating of audiovisual content slated for broadcast, distribution and exhibition on their platforms.

KFCB hopes to turn around the way content meant for broadcast is rated. Currently, the board examines and classifies all the audiovisual content meant for consumption in Kenya. Under the new framework, however, broadcasters will rate 70% of the content they air on platforms.

Since the country switched from analogue to digital broadcasting transmission, there has been an influx of content creators and broadcasting platforms, creating the need to innovate ways to evaluate content.

Kenya has been striving to put in place mechanisms to spur growth in the film industry,  and regulation has been cited as an important approach to the process. However, players in the industry have long held the belief that regulation has been stifling growth rather than elevating the industry to regional and global competitiveness.
