HMD Global Announces New Nokia Smartphones with Android 11 and 5G

There are six new incoming phones from HMD Global

HMD Global held a major launch event yesterday evening. The company announced six new Nokia smartphones; the first devices launched since the year began. The phone launch saw HMD Global change its naming convention for smartphones – from the usual decimal system to an alphanumeric one.

Under the new naming system, the company launched three new smartphone lineups. The new X series is the top-of-the-line range targeting the mid-range market, followed by the G and C series aimed for the budget and entry-level markets.

For a start, HMD announced two new phones under each series. The mid-range X series lineup includes Nokia X10 and X20. The budget G series has the G20 and G10, and the C series Nokia C20 and C10.

HMD also unveiled its new Nokia Lite Earbuds.

As mentioned above, the X series targets the mid-range market. The new X20 and X10 are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 chip which supports 5G connectivity. Both feature similar Nordic design language, but the hole-punch selfie is centrally aligned.

Part of the main features of the X20 and X10 is a quad-camera setup with ZEISS Optics for enhanced performance. They have identical 6.67-inch FHD+ displays.

HMD promises three major Android updates with the duo. And given that both have Android 11 out of the box, they’ll be updated to Android 14.

Nokia X20 and X10 have similar rear-facing quad-camera setups except for the primary cameras. The X20 has a 64MP primary camera, a 5MP ultrawide camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. HMD maintained the same lineup for the X10, replacing the 64MP primary camera with a 48MP camera.

The G series promises three days of battery life on paper and two years of OS updates.  The G20 and G10 feature a 6.5-inch IPS panel with a teardrop notch instead of a punch-hole, as seen in the X10 and X20. There’s also no 5G support here as the G20 and G10 runs on a MediaTek Helio G35.

The G20 features a 48MP quad rear-facing camera system, including a 48MP primary camera (f/1.79 aperture), a 5MP ultrawide camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. The G10 has a less versatile system with a 13MP primary camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor.

On the front, both have an 8MP selfie camera. They also have an identical 5050mAh battery with standard 10W charging despite shipping with a USB Type-C (USB 2.0) port.

Nokia G20 is available in two memory/storage configurations – 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 4GB RAM + 128GB storage. The G10 is available in 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage.

Both have microSD card support up to 512GB.

Nokia C series is for first-time smartphone buyers. The major pitch about the duo is their entry-level price. Nokia C20 features 4G LTE, but the C10 doesn’t.

They ship with up to 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 3000mAh removable battery with 5W charging, microSD card support (up to 256GB), 2D Face unlock, a 5MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, and a 5MP selfie camera.

Both have a 6.5-inch HD+ display with a waterdrop notch. Under the hood, the C20 is powered by an Octa-core Unisoc chip, while the C10 a Quad-core one from Unisoc.
