Getty Images threatens to sue Stability AI over copyright Infringement

US photo stock company Getty Images on Tuesday threatened to sue a tech company for what it terms of copyright infringement.

Getty Images, a company known for its rich photo resource and distribution worldwide says that Stability AI, which owns a tool called Stable Diffusion is profiting from its photos without giving obtaining the necessary licensing or giving due credit. Stable Diffusion allows users to generate mashed images just by inputting a few words of text.

“It is Getty Images’ position that Stability AI unlawfully copied and processed millions of images protected by copyright,” the company said in a statement.

”Stability AI did not seek any such license from Getty Images and instead, we believe, chose to ignore viable licensing options and long‑standing legal protections in pursuit of their stand‑alone commercial interests.” the statement further reads.

There has been an increase in cases of copyright infringement where AI firms and content creators have traded accusations. Creators are calling for recognition credit and a clear direction for the future of the creative industry.

AI art tools such as Stable Diffusion have coined a market where human-created images are used in various aspects. Such images are often scraped from the web, often without their creators’ knowledge or consent.

AI firms argue that this practice is covered by laws like the US fair use doctrine, but many rights holders disagree and say it constitutes a copyright violation. Legal experts are divided on the issue but agree that such questions will have to be decided for certain in the courts.
