African producer of kids content Ubongo receives $27.8 Million from Lego Foundation

Africa’s leading creator and producer of children’s educational media, Ubongo has received a $27.8 Million Dollar Award from Lego Foundation Build a World of Play Challenge to fund bold, innovative and impactful solutions focused on early childhood.

The money is part of a $117 Million kitty awarded by the children’s advocacy organization LEGO Foundation aimed at supporting organizations that make substantial contributions to the lives of children from birth to six years old and spark a global movement to prioritize early childhood development.

Iman Lipumba, Ubongo’s Director of Communications and Development said that the money will go a long way in helping create content for and with the African children.

“African kids have the potential to transform the world as we know it. With this opportunity, millions more children across the continent will grow up with African learning experiences that are designed for them and with them.”

Ubongo was founded in 2013 and has been churning out highly creative, educative and entertaining children’s shows released through TV, radio, digital, and mobile to over 31 million families in 23 countries in Africa. They have won the hearts of fans and followers for their ability to localize content and make it relevant in different environments.

The Challenge received a total of 627 valid proposals from 86 countries, from which ten finalists were selected. Applicants were evaluated by multi-disciplinary experts from across the world based on four criteria: whether they were impactful, feasible, community-centred, and sustainable.
