Uber has recorded 1 billion rides in Africa

Uber is celebrating a huge milestone having clocked a billion rides across all its markets in Africa.

The company whose first African market was South Africa has covered over 10 billion kilometres, a statement released to the press indicates.

“Since entering the market in 2013, we have created over 6 million economic opportunities in over 50 cities across SSA that we are present in,” said Lorraine Onduru, the company’s spokesperson and head of communications for East and West Africa.

Despite facing stiff competition from providers such as Bolt, Uber has continued to grow exponentially. In the past year, Uber has expanded to more than 30 cities and smaller urban towns within its markets.

Uber’s food-delivery subsidiary Uber Eats has been a key contributor to the company’s growth. When Uber eats launched in 2016 it quickly enlisted 1000 restaurants. There are currently more than 8,000 merchants serving its African markets.

Uber’s entry into the African taxi market was a disruption that set it on unchartered waters. In Kenya, the company is embroiled in a civil suit that was filed by a group of drivers after commissions were sliced by more than 35%.

The company says it has created over 50,000 driver jobs across Africa. Both Uber and Uber Eats are reported to have delivered 30 million rides and food orders.in sub-Saharan Africa.
