Samsung Phones Will Now Receive Three years of Major OS Updates
At its second annual Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung officially debuted a slate of new devices to add to the already wide portfolio. Also, the company announced that it will be offering three years of software updates to its Samsung Galaxy phones. There will be “three generations” of updates.
So for those who plan to grab the next Galaxy device, beware that the company is committed to seed out three major software updates on top of what comes from the box. For instance, the recently announced Android 10 powered Note 20 range will receive Android 11, 12, and 13.
Furthermore, the company will also provide three years of monthly or quarterly security patches.
These changes might seem minimal, but few manufacturers accomplish to do this. For the record, only Google’s Pixel phones get three major OS updates. Even Nokia which has its phones sheltered under the Android One umbrella doesn’t provide three years of OS upgrades.
For Samsung, the company has been offering two years of major OS upgrades alongside monthly security patches for minor bug fixing then a year of quarterly patches.
The new promise starts with last year’s Galaxy S10 range. This means the S10 line will reach the end of life support after Android 12 – coming 2021.
Three years of updates in Android OS land is plausible. But looking over at the iOS world, things are even more appealing. Apple is still unbeatable when it comes to durability and long-term support.
