Infinix ZERO 5 Review: Its Big, Powerful With Great Cameras
The Infinix ZERO 5 was launched a couple of weeks ago in the country. Prior to this launch, Infinix had officially unveiled the device at a colorful event held in Dubai, the first international launch the company was doing.
This flagship device from Infinix Mobile features some impressive specs, definitely what you would expect from a flagship device. One of the key highlights of the Infinix ZERO 5 is the dual camera and as I mentioned during my review of the Tecno Phantom 8, this is the future of smartphone photography. In fact, an article published on The Verge describes 2017 as the year of dual-camera smartphones, so we should not really be surprised that Infinix decided to go with this trends on the ZERO 5. I mean it’s harder to find a 2017 flagship phone without an extra lens. Why? Because an extra camera is an easy thing to sell to people.
Well, I managed to get the Infinix ZERO 5 from Infinix Mobile and for the last three weeks, I have been interacting with the device, testing its performance, the camera which was so much hyped by the company and all the other tiny details.

Camera 9/10
Before we go into anything else I would want us to talk about the Infinix ZERO 5 Camera.
The camera comprises of a 12MP with a wide-angle lens and a 13MP sensor with a telephoto lens which again as I said in my Tecno Phantom 8 review can help you capture some good images that blur out the background of your subject. This dual camera setup is amazing, the images captured are sharp and clear.
The camera app is not that hard to use and features the most common modes including professional mode which gives you a wide range of parameters to control, portrait mode whose shots have a decent amount of details though they are slightly grainy.
The HELIO P25 on the dual camera does also no disappoint. Remember this processor, which was launched by MediaTek in February 2017 was built with dual camera devices in mind. It was designed for Android smartphones that aim to differentiate through exceptional camera features and overall image quality.
The selfie camera is on the Infinix ZERO 5 is 16MP with LED flash also has some really interesting features like the WideSelfie, beauty and Bokeh effect which I really loved. With the Bokeh effect on, the camera lens blurs part of a photo, the final shot is quite pleasing to the eye. Basically, with Bokeh effect, a sharply focused subject stands out beautifully against a blurred background. Check some of the selfies I took below with the Bokeh effect.
How I wish Infinix could have incorporated this same feature on the main camera. This intelligent camera software which I have also seen on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 does some good work.
Design and Display 6/10
The Infinix ZERO 5 has a 5.98-inch Full HD 2.5D curved glass display with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 368 PPI. Not bad if you asked me but I feel 5.98 inches is just too big.
One of the problems I had was holding the phone in my hand but of course, people who love big phones will love the device.
The display is pretty good, bright and offers some good color output. The screen also has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protections to protect the device from scratches. The screen-to-body ratio is about 72%, meaning you might find it uncomfortable using it by one hand.
Infinix ZERO 5 Battery, specs and Performance 8/10
The Infinix Zero 5 is powered by 2.6GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio P25 processor and it comes with a whopping 6GB of RAM. 6GB of RAM is more than we need in a smartphone and makes the performance of this device quite smooth. The phone also packs 64GB of internal storage that can be expanded to 128GB via a MicroSD card and also runs on Android 7.0 with Infinix’s custom XOS Hummingbird UI running on top.
The Infinix ZERO 5 is a dual SIM and I need to mention that it is one of the few smartphones in the market with a dedicated dual Micro SIM slots and a MicroSD card slot that accepts MicroSD cards of up to 128GB.
In terms of Connectivity, options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, FM, 3G, and 4G. The device also comes with a Dual Apps support through an app called Multi Account.
The fingerprint sensor on the device, apart from just securing the device also allows you to create, manage, and configure other functions. They include taking photos, accepting calls, browsing pictures, recording calls. Infinix also says you can also use the fingerprint to authorize purchases, I haven’t tried this out though.
The Infinix ZERO 5 comes with a 4350mAh non-removable battery and supports fast charging. The performance is great. On full charge, the battery takes me for two days, even on heavy use. On average use, the battery took me close to two days.
What I liked
- Display
- Build and quality
- Camera performance
- Battery life and fast charging support.
- Dedicated SIM slots and the MicroSD slot
What I didn’t like
- The size: The Infinix ZERO 5 looks huge and bulky
Conclusion and pricing 8/10
Overall, the Infinix ZERO 5 is a great device and comes with so many upgraded features from its predecessor the Infinix ZERO 4. The performance is great, the cameras with the different modes does a great job. The display is good and anybody who loves big phones will definitely like this. My problem was only with the size but as I said some people might be comfortable with is.
The device is available in the market for Ksh.27,400, and you can grab one from online retailer Jumia or Infinix authorized distributors across the country. Something else, Infinix’s Carlcare service center will also be offering free screen replacements for the first 6 months after purchase of the device.
The company is giving ZERO 5 and ZERO 5 Pro owners a chance to win a fully paid trip to Shanghai, China courtesy of its #StayTrue Shooting awards. Users who own the ZERO 5 are encouraged to take photos with their new phones and share them on the competition’s online portal for a chance to win this trip, an Infinix Quiet X or an Infinix ZERO 5 smartphone.
