Showmax Subscribers Shift to DStv Stream with Trial Access Running Through May

As Showmax closes, the path for subscribers moving to DStv Stream starts with a limited free trial window

MultiChoice has begun rolling out a transition plan for Showmax subscribers, moving them to DStv Stream, offering a free trial of DStv Stream Compact from 01 April to 31 May, as as it prepares to discontinue the standalone Showmax app on 30 April.

The arrangement is aimed at retaining existing streaming customers as viewing shifts fully onto DStv Stream. Eligible users, specifically those without an active DStv subscription, will receive access to the Compact package during the trial window.

After that period, subscribers who opt in can continue on DStv Stream at ZAR 99(Ksh 760) per month, matching what they previously paid for Showmax. The rate will hold for 12 months, contingent on account status. The standard price for the package remains ZAR 399(Ksh 3060), placing the offer at a 75 percent discount.

Who qualifies and what changes

The transition primarily affects direct-to-consumer Showmax users and those without bundled DStv access. Existing DStv customers who already receive Showmax through their subscription are excluded from the trial, although they will see Showmax content integrated into DStv Stream at no added cost.

Willington Ngwepe said the objective is continuity, with the combined platform carrying forward Showmax Originals alongside a broader on-demand library.

Migration is required to keep access

The shift is not automatic. Users will need to register for DStv Stream using details sent to their email and set up a new profile. MultiChoice says the process takes under 5 minutes, but access will not carry over unless users complete it.

All Showmax plans are included in the transition window, including the Premier League mobile tier, which remains a key retention point for sports viewers.

Billing stops, refunds remain an option

Customers who decide against moving across can request refunds for any unused portion of their subscription, subject to standard terms. Automatic billing for Showmax will end once the service is discontinued.

Showmax stopped accepting new subscribers on 31 March, closing entry ahead of the platform’s final switch-off.

“Access continues, but only if users take the step to move.”

A single streaming path going forward

The change consolidates MultiChoice’s streaming offering into one platform, folding Showmax into DStv Stream rather than running parallel services. For viewers, the immediate reality is practical: continued access now depends on completing the move, even as pricing remains temporarily favourable.
