Airtel Grows to 650 Million Users as Africa and India Scale
Airtel’s global customer base crosses 650 million, with India and Africa carrying most of the weight
Bharti Airtel has reported that its global customer base has surpassed 650 million users, reinforcing its position as one of the largest telecom operators worldwide. Data from GSMA Intelligence ranks Airtel as the second-largest mobile operator globally by subscriber base, behind China Mobile.
The scale reflects sustained growth across both India and Africa, where Airtel continues to expand mobile, broadband, and financial service offerings.
India remains the core market
In India, Airtel accounts for over 368 million mobile subscribers, forming the backbone of the overall Bharti Airtel customer base. The company has also built a sizable presence in fixed and home services, with 13 million broadband connections and 15 million digital TV households.
Its enterprise division, Airtel Business, is positioning itself deeper into infrastructure and platform services. Offerings include Airtel IQ, cybersecurity, SD-WAN, cloud, managed services, and IoT. These are supported by a network spanning more than 400,000 route km of subsea fibre and data centre capacity through Nxtra by Airtel.
Africa operations expand Airtel’s footprint
Across Africa, Airtel Africa contributes over 179 million customers across 14 countries, making it a critical pillar of the Bharti Airtel customer base.
The company’s strategy in the region centres on Airtel Money, which now serves more than 52 million users. The platform has grown alongside demand for mobile-led financial services, particularly in underbanked markets.
Voice, data, and international roaming remain core services, but mobile finance continues to anchor user engagement and retention.
Global ranking and competitive position
The latest figures place Airtel just behind China Mobile in global rankings, underscoring the scale achieved by operators serving high-growth markets.
The gap reflects structural differences in domestic market size, but Airtel’s cross-regional footprint across Asia and Africa gives it a distinct operating profile compared to single-market incumbents.
What comes next
Airtel’s next phase is likely to depend on how effectively it converts scale into higher-value services, particularly in enterprise connectivity and financial platforms.
With over 650 million users, the Bharti Airtel customer base now provides both reach and leverage across two of the world’s fastest-growing telecom markets.
“Airtel’s scale now rests on both connectivity and financial services across two continents.”
