Isiolo Innovator Wins Red Bull Basement Kenya Finals, Heads to Silicon Valley
A 23-year-old innovator from Isiolo County has won the Red Bull Basement Kenya National Finals with an AI platform designed to support Kenya’s pastoralist communities, earning a spot at the global competition in Silicon Valley this June.
Abdihamid Hassan, a graduate of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, beat 15 finalists selected from over 3,800 nationwide submissions at a ceremony held at iHUB Nairobi on Saturday.
His solution, Arda Link AI, uses artificial intelligence and real-time satellite data to monitor livestock nutrition, track herding movements, and forecast drought conditions and pasture availability. The platform is built to operate in local pastoralist dialects to reach communities that conventional digital tools often exclude.
“I want to thank my fellow finalists because no idea was small. Let’s execute these ideas regardless of the outcome,” Hassan said after his win. “I also want to thank Red Bull Basement for this amazing opportunity, and being able to showcase the solutions Kenyans want, especially in my homeland in Isiolo County.”
Kenya’s pastoralist industry is valued at $1.1 billion and accounts for approximately 90 percent of the country’s meat supply.
The judging panel included AfricaHackon founder Dr. Bright Gameli, Kytabu founder Tonee Ndungu, Vivo Fashion CEO Wandia Gichuru, and Microsoft senior software engineer Fatma Ali. Ndungu outlined what set Hassan’s entry apart. “The first was idea feasibility, and if it can work. The second was business impact and how it can grow. Then there was the founder profile. The last one was concept uniqueness; it must be something that cannot be built anywhere else online.”
Judge Wandia Gichuru noted the broader significance of the competition. “This year’s competition highlights the opportunities we have in Africa. Every African country in this competition has the chance to showcase to the world what Africa has to offer and how it can use its own innovation to solve its challenges.”
Dr. Gameli added that the quality of ideas extended well beyond the winner. “I wouldn’t want to see the 14 ideas die, I want to see them grow and, yes, I would invest in them.”
Hassan now enters a global pre-acceleration phase where he will develop a Minimum Viable Product, supported by an AMD AI laptop and $5,000 in Microsoft Azure credits. He will then compete against 44 other national winners, drawn from 100,000 innovators globally, at the Red Bull Basement World Final. The global prize stands at $100,000, an additional $25,000 in Azure credits, and mentorship from Red Bull Ventures.
Red Bull Basement was launched in São Paulo in 2015 and expanded into Africa in 2018.
