AXIAN Telecom and AST SpaceMobile Partner to Launch Satellite-to-Phone Broadband Across Africa

AXIAN Telecom has announced a strategic partnership with AST SpaceMobile to deliver space-based cellular broadband directly to standard mobile devices.
The collaboration aims to provide voice, video, and high-speed data to remote, rural, and maritime areas where traditional cell towers are physically or economically impossible to build.
Unlike traditional satellite internet that requires bulky dishes or specialized hardware, AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird satellites function as towers in space. Operating in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), these satellites connect directly to the 4G LTE and 5G smartphones already in consumers’ pockets.
For AXIAN Telecom, the parent company of the pan-African brand Yas, the partnership is a cornerstone of its “Data4All” strategy. By integrating AST’s satellite constellation with Yas’s core infrastructure, the group can now offer seamless connectivity in environments ranging from deep-sea shipping lanes to isolated farming communities.
“Our ambition has always been to build a network that works for everyone in Africa, not just those in cities,” said Hassan Jaber, CEO of AXIAN Telecom. “Partnering with AST SpaceMobile gives us the ability to close that gap… without asking [customers] to do anything differently.”
The rollout will focus on several critical sectors beyond basic consumer browsing. This includes enterprise and IoT solutions for tracking and data in logistics and agriculture, as well as dedicated services for maritime and aviation sectors. Furthermore, the partnership strengthens national resilience by maintaining a network that stays online for emergency responders even when terrestrial towers fail due to natural disasters. Customers will eventually be able to access these services through a simple one-click activation process integrated into their existing Yas mobile plans.
While the technology is designed to be plug-and-play for the end user, the backend requires significant coordination. AXIAN and AST SpaceMobile are currently working with local regulators across AXIAN’s markets to secure spectrum usage and approvals.
Scott Wisniewski, President of AST SpaceMobile, emphasized the importance of the region:”Africa is a critical part of the global connectivity landscape. Together with Yas, we are bringing space-based cellular broadband to people and communities beyond the reach of traditional infrastructure.”
