South Africa to Host World Economic Forum in 2027

South Africa has been selected to host the World Economic Forum (WEF) in April 2027, a move poised to catalyze continental economic transformation and solidify the nation’s standing as a global diplomatic heavyweight.

The announcement was made by International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola during the 2026 WEF annual meeting in Davos. The selection underscores South Africa’s status as the continent’s most advanced economy and its pivotal role in convening global leaders to tackle pressing financial, political, and developmental challenges.

Addressing delegates in Switzerland, Minister Lamola asserted that South Africa is uniquely positioned to lead high-level discourse. He framed the country not just as an industrial powerhouse, but as a vital representative of the Global South.

“South Africa’s leadership in climate diplomacy, renewable energy transition, digital transformation, and regional integration aligns closely with the World Economic Forum’s mission to improve the state of our world,” Lamola stated.

The 2026 Davos summit, which concluded on Friday, served as a springboard for this announcement. The event brought together heads of state, academia, and civil society to set global priorities for the coming year.

The South African delegation, led by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, utilized the 2026 summit to pivot from theoretical plans to “concrete evidence” of economic recovery.

“When we came here in 2025, we presented an ambitious plan for driving economic reforms and mobilizing private investment,” Godongwana told investors. “We returned in 2026 not with promises, but with real success.”

The National Treasury emphasized a commitment to stabilizing national debt within the current fiscal year. Officials noted that a lowered inflation target is expected to reduce costs across the economy, providing the “price certainty” required to lure long-term global capital.

The decision to award South Africa the 2027 hosting rights is widely seen as a vote of confidence following the country’s successful G20 Presidency in 2025. Minister Godongwana remarked that the G20 summit proved South Africa could act as a “credible mediator” on sensitive issues like debt relief and multilateral institutional reform.

By hosting the WEF in 2027, South Africa aims to do more than showcase its own infrastructure; it seeks to amplify the African voice in global affairs and demonstrate the continent’s readiness for large-scale industrial transformation.
