Airtel Africa and SpaceX have announced a strategic partnership to introduce Starlink Direct to Cell satellite services across 14 African markets.
This partnership aims to provide seamless network access to 174 million customers, specifically reaching those in remote regions where traditional terrestrial coverage is unavailable.
The service is scheduled to begin in 2026, starting with text messaging and essential data applications. The agreement further includes support for Starlink’s first broadband Direct to Cell system, which utilizes next-generation satellites to provide high-speed connectivity to standard smartphones with a 20x improvement in data speeds.
Airtel Africa MD and Chief Executive Officer Sunil Taldar highlighted the importance of this integration for the region’s digital infrastructure. He stated, “Airtel Africa remains committed to delivering a great experience to our customers by improving access to reliable and contiguous mobile connectivity solutions. Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell technology complements the terrestrial infrastructure and even reaches areas where deploying terrestrial network solutions is challenging. We are very excited about the collaboration with Starlink, which will establish a new standard for service availability across all our 14 markets.”
The initiative marks the first time a satellite-to-mobile service of this scale has been deployed in Africa, essentially turning SpaceX’s satellite constellation into a network of “space-based cell towers.” This technology allows standard LTE phones to connect without any hardware modifications or additional equipment.
Starlink Vice President of Sales, Stephanie Bednarek, noted the transformative potential of the deal for underserved communities. “For the first time, people across Africa will stay connected in remote areas where terrestrial coverage cannot reach, and we’re so thrilled that Starlink Direct to Cell can power this life-changing service. Through this agreement with Airtel Africa, we’ll also deliver our next-generation technology to offer high-speed broadband connectivity, which will offer faster access to many essential services.” she said.
By bridging the digital divide, Airtel Africa and SpaceX are setting a new precedent for telecommunications on the continent. Both companies intend to continue exploring collaboration opportunities to further advance digital inclusion and provide reliable mobile access to every corner of the 14 markets served.
