LINX Accra goes live in new Digital Realty ACR2 data centre

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has officially activated its interconnection hub within the newly launched Digital Realty ACR2 data centre, marking a significant expansion of West Africa’s digital infrastructure. The deployment, effective December 12, integrates the ACR2 facility into LINX Accra’s broader multi-site fabric, offering enhanced redundancy and connectivity options for the region.

The move allows networks co-located at Digital Realty’s facility to access low-latency peering services through a single cross-connect. This activation cements Accra’s status as a rapidly maturing digital hub, following LINX’s earlier deployments at Onix and PAIX data centres in the city.

Digital Realty’s ACR2 data centre, which opened its doors in October 2025, is a state-of-the-art facility situated in downtown Accra. With an IT load capacity of 1.7MW, it is strategically positioned near key submarine cable landing stations, including the massive 2Africa cable system.

By establishing a presence in ACR2, LINX is effectively creating a robust, distributed internet exchange network across the Ghanaian capital. This “multi-site” approach enables service providers to exchange traffic locally rather than routing it through Europe, significantly reducing latency and operational costs for Ghanaian businesses and consumers.

Nurani Nimpuno, Head of Global Engagement for LINX, highlighted the critical role of infrastructure partnerships in this expansion.

“We are lucky to have such engaged data centre partners here in Ghana. When building IXPs in new geographies, collaboration is key,” said Nimpuno. “Our data centre partners are a key part of our business case when building in new locations and success is very much a team effort. When our team are on the ground installing, we work closely alongside our data centre partners to ensure the project is compliant with their security measures and is installed efficiently while knowledge sharing along the way.”

The activation in Accra represents LINX’s third major footprint in Africa, following successful launches in Nairobi (2023) and Mombasa (February 2025). This rapid succession of deployments underscores a strategic commitment to decentralizing internet traffic across the continent.

For decades, African internet traffic was frequently “tromboned” out of the continent to exchange points in London or Marseilles before returning, adding unnecessary delay. The presence of global exchange points like LINX in West Africa allows for “data sovereignty”, keeping local traffic local.

Founded in 1994, LINX is one of the world’s largest member-owned internet exchanges, connecting over 900 autonomous systems globally. Its expansion into Ghana is expected to accelerate the local digital ecosystem, attracting content delivery networks (CDNs), cloud providers, and fintech innovators seeking reliable, high-speed interconnection.
