Data center operator iColo is playing a central role in a new co-operative agreement that will see the London Internet Exchange (LINX) take over Asteroid Kenya’s operations.
iColo, a Digital Realty Company and a strategic partner for LINX in Africa, has supported the transition, which was first announced in September 2025. The agreement involves migrating Asteroid’s customers in Mombasa and Nairobi to LINX’s interconnection hubs. Asteroid Kenya is scheduled to cease its operations at the end of 2025.
The transition relies heavily on iColo’s infrastructure, as its Mombasa One (MBA1) and Mombasa Two (MBA2) data centers host the majority of the customer networks involved.
“The support of our partners iColo in this project is crucial and we are grateful that we have such a close and collaborative relationship,” said Nurani Nimpuno, Head of Global Engagement for LINX. “We share the vision of improving interconnection and digital infrastructure in Kenya.”
According to the companies, the LINX and Asteroid teams are working together to ensure a smooth migration for customers. Many networks are reportedly already live and peering at the LINX hubs in Mombasa and Nairobi.
Nimpuno noted that the transition has been “so far, with so many Kenyan networks joining LINX and gaining access to a whole suite of new interconnection services.”
“This solidifies our belief that Kenya is well positioned as a major East African hub, supporting improved connectivity for the entire region,” Nimpuno added.
iColo’s carrier-neutral data centers have been pivotal to LINX’s growth in the country. Mombasa, in particular, is a key interconnection market, serving as the landing point for seven submarine cables that connect Kenya to the rest of Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
“We are excited to support LINX in this important evolution,” said Marcel Louw, Managing Director, Africa at Digital Realty. “Our partnership has already delivered strong results in Nairobi and Mombasa, and we look forward to enabling further growth and innovation in East Africa’s digital ecosystem.”
