Partnership to Bring Reliable Internet to Millions in Rural Africa Announced

NEC XON, a leading African systems integrator, has entered into a strategic partnership with Mimosa Networks, a global leader in fixed wireless solutions, to accelerate digital inclusion by delivering high-speed broadband connectivity to underserved and rural communities across Africa.

The collaboration has already secured a major deployment across four African territories with one of the continent’s largest mobile network operators, marking a significant step toward bridging the digital divide and expanding access to reliable internet.

“Too often, connectivity is the privilege of the few,” said Liesle Botha, Key Account Executive at NEC XON. “Our vision with Mimosa is to extend reliable, high-speed broadband to the communities, schools, hospitals, clinics, and government facilities that need it most, places that fibre simply cannot reach easily or affordably.”

In many rural regions, traditional mobile operators face limited commercial incentives to deploy broadband infrastructure due to low demand for data-intensive services such as streaming. However, these areas remain in critical need of connectivity for education, healthcare, and economic participation.

“Mimosa’s technology is specifically engineered for challenging environments, such as rural South Africa. By leveraging unlicensed spectrum, high-gain antennas, and robust design, we’ve partnered with NEC XON to overcome congestion issues and deliver reliable broadband,” said Mohsin Ali, Director of Channel Sales for the Middle East and Africa at Mimosa Networks.

Mimosa’s point-to-multipoint wireless technology allows broadband to be distributed from a single location to multiple endpoints, offering a cost-effective and rapid deployment model ideally suited to Africa’s vast and difficult terrains, where fibre rollouts are often expensive or logistically unfeasible. The technology provides extended frequency support for improved reach and flexibility, high subscriber speeds even in congested or interference-heavy environments, and new non-line-of-sight devices that ensure connectivity even where direct access points are obstructed.

The partnership is already seeing deployments with multiple operators in Southern Africa, with additional rollouts planned across the continent.

“Our strategic partnership with Mimosa positions NEC XON to lead the charge in expanding wireless broadband infrastructure across sub-Saharan Africa,” Botha added. “Together, we’re building scalable, affordable, and carrier-grade solutions that empower millions through access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunity.”

Mimosa Networks, backed by India’s Jio Platforms, has become one of the fastest-growing providers of fixed wireless broadband solutions globally, with more than three million devices deployed worldwide. Its continued innovation in non-line-of-sight connectivity makes it a key player in closing Africa’s connectivity gap.

The collaboration represents a major milestone in NEC XON’s mission to connect the unconnected and drive Africa’s digital transformation through inclusive, high-speed broadband access.
