KRA GavaConnect API Platform Expands With 16 APIs, Giving Developers New Tools to Simplify Taxes

The Kenya Revenue Authority invites the tech community to co-create solutions that make interacting with government services faster, simpler, and more intuitive

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is turning its focus to technology in a big way. At its second API Masterclass, the agency brought together developers to build tools that make paying taxes less of a chore.

At the heart of this effort is GavaConnect, a platform that allows businesses and developers to plug directly into KRA’s systems. Already, it features 16 APIs and has attracted over 1,000 registered developers. For a public sector agency, it’s a milestone that few have achieved.

Annastacia Githuba, KRA’s Deputy Commissioner for Program Delivery & Client Engagement, says GavaConnect is about more than technology — it’s about collaboration. “We want to put developers and innovators at the center of service delivery,” she said. “This is about making government services accessible in ways that let people create solutions around them.”

The platform’s current APIs tackle practical tasks: checking PINs, verifying Tax Compliance Certificates, filing NIL returns, and confirming e-Slips. The goal is simple — reduce friction, save time, and make compliance easier for everyone.

The Masterclass gave developers a hands-on look at the platform. There were live demos, presentations of KRA’s vision, and plenty of space for feedback. Attendees suggested new features and shared ideas, which will help shape the next phase of GavaConnect. Upcoming integrations include the electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) and enhanced VAT compliance tools.

By opening its systems to developers, KRA is creating opportunities for innovation — and even for developers to build solutions that could become commercial tools. It’s a shift in how government and tech can work together, and for Kenyan businesses, it could make interacting with the tax system far less painful.
