X Pauses Encrypted DMs, Raising Concerns Over Secure Messaging
Privacy on Pause or Strategy at Play?

X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, has declared that encrypted DMs are to be suspended indefinitely, with no clue on when they will be reinstated. Previously sent encrypted chats are still accessible to users, but there is presently no option to send a new encrypted message. This unforeseen suspension affects verified users, the only group that had ever gotten to the feature-before raising questions about what future privacy options will exist on the platform.
How Encrypted DMs Worked on X
An early access privacy option, now offered as a feature in X, gave access to encrypted messages only to confirmed accounts with mutual follows or with accounts that had previously accepted DMs into their inbox. The encryption, however, had limitations: it does not apply to group chats, multimedia messages, or metadata; therefore, the security offered to users remained only partial as compared to other chat applications that provide end-to-end encryption.
The Pause, Explained
Officially, X says it is pausing encrypted DMs while working on “improvements.” But the company did not provide any details as to what these improvements may be or when the feature will be restored. This has led to concern from its user base as well as privacy advocates about the absence of transparency, fearing that the pause might be an indicator of deeper issues or that the feature might have been deprioritized by the company.
Technical and Operational Challenges Behind the Pause
The suspension’s timing coincides with major technical issues affecting X, among them outages affecting inbox functionality following a major fire at the Oregon data center. Although X has not made public the direct link between the outages and the suspension of encrypted DMs, the instability in the system could well be an added factor to consider.
What This Means for Privacy: Are Users at Risk?
With encrypted DMs on a pause, privacy safeguards are down for users communicating on X. Even before, X’s encryption was limited compared to fully encrypted messaging apps, such as Signal or WhatsApp. Putting a stop to even this partial encryption sparks doubt on how seriously the platform is considering a secure means of communication or keeping user data private.
The Future of Messaging on X: What to Expect From XChat
The encrypted DM pause comes amid rumors of XChat- a new messaging platform from X promising privacy features like PIN-protected chat and perhaps enhanced encryption. While leaked screenshots hint at these features, X has offered little official word, leaving users unsure whether XChat would merely restore secure messaging or go further.
The Uncertain Road Ahead for Secure Messaging on X
Pausing encrypted DMs sets X into an uncertain position about users’ privacy unless a clear road map is constituted. Until the company comes out with a clear statement on its vision and commitment to provide a fully universal and user-friendly form of encryption, a shadow of doubt would remain as to whether X truly seeks secure communication. Users should keep their eyes glued for updates as X may be on the verge of another promontory with its messaging services.
X declined to comment further on an encrypted DM pause or the timeframe for returning the feature.
