Sony WH-1000XM6: Next-Gen Noise-Canceling King on the Horizon

Sony is planning to launch the WH-1000XM6, its next-generation premium headphones to succeed the WH-1000XM5 launched in 2022.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 has surfaced in multiple certification databases hinting at a global launch. The WH-1000XM6 was listed on Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) database confirming that they are a “Wireless Noise Cancelling Stereo Headset” with Bluetooth support with model number YY2984.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 was also listed with the FCC last month with additional insights such as a new design with a new hinge mechanism and removable earpads.

The headphones will support Bluetooth 5.3 and LE Audio, enhancing wireless connectivity and audio performance. The headphones will also feature a MediaTek chipset, allowing fast charging and improving battery efficiency.

The headphones are rumored also to have 30mm drivers and Qualcomm’s aptX codec for higher-quality audio output.

Sony is planning to launch the headphones likely between April and May and come in three colours – Black, Blue, and White.

Sony has always been the premium option for its noise-canceling headphones, which have always been in the top rank within the market. It has, every time, served the best when it comes to comfort, noise cancellation, and audio performance. WH-1000XM series has a long history of being built upon, with every iteration being more refined than the last. The XM3 model got USB-C, and better comfort, while the XM4 featured multi-device connectivity. The XM5 meanwhile marked a huge shift due to its form of non-foldable design and an even better quality noise cancelation system.

Sony XM5s, with their superb ANC, comfort, and mic quality stand tall, while the AirPods Max take the upper hand with the transparency mode and build quality.

Details remain scarce about the upcoming headphones but the XM6 is expected to build upon the strengths of the XM5. Given Sony’s track record, expectations are high for another industry-leading noise-canceling headset.
