OPPO Find N5: Thinnest Foldable Yet or Just Hype?

An official launch event for the OPPO Find N5 has been planned for February 20.

OPPO officially unveiled the design for the Find N5 foldable smartphone with a video released on social media touting it as the world’s thinnest foldable.

OPPO Find N5 boasts a sleek design with a large inner display and a smaller camera bump than the previous Find N3 is what the video captured.

Although the three-sensor rear camera module, which includes a periscope lens, continues to be populated, it implies a continuing interest in high-end photography. The device will come in two color options, “Cosmic Black” and “Misty White”.

At its thinnest, OPPO claims this model is, in a folded state, the thinnest book-style foldable, surpassing even Samsung’s Z Fold series. Although the trifold Mate XT by Huawei may have an edge in size when open, the Find N5 is, with no doubt, the winner when it comes to compactness, standing tall even while closed.

Despite being thin, the Find N5 is not fragile. The phone is stabilized with a titanium hinge reinforced with an aluminum frame.

The Find N5 has great water resistance ratings and is IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9 certified.

The color options for the phone include Satin Black and Jade White for most markets, with a vegan leather model in Dusk Purple available exclusively in China.

The Satin Black model lives up to its name, and sports a smooth matte finish resistant to fingerprints.

The Find N5 has an 8.12-inch inner display and runs on ColorOS 15, which is built upon Android 15. Snapdragon 8 Elite processor with 16GB of RAM and up to 12GB of virtual RAM powers the phone together with 512GB of storage.

The phone has a 5,600mAh battery supporting 80W for wired and 50W for wireless charging.

The Find N5 will have a dual rear-camera setup with 50 MP sensors and an 8 MP sensor. The front-facing camera will have 8 MP for both the outer and inner displays. This represents quite an enormous downgrade compared to the Find N3’s 32 MP and 20 MP front camera setup and more robust rear configuration with 48 MP and 64 MP sensors.

Camera specification changes might work as an adjustment to achieve the Find N5’s ultra-thin profile. Now, whether OPPO will compensate for the downgrade with superior software processing remains to be seen.

Given that the foldable market is heating up, it would only be right to place the Oppo Find N5 side by side with the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The Z Fold 6 has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, 7.9-inch inner display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Having Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the outside and a new hinge design that optimizes reduced crease visibility, Samsung’s foldable seemingly wins on the build.

In the camera department, Z Fold 6 comes with a 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto, and a 10MP front camera. While the Find N5 may have a slightly bigger inner display and more battery capacity, the Z Fold 6 could put more out there in terms of camera hardware and software optimizations.

Multitasking capabilities are likely to be far superior with Samsung’s One UI 6.1 designed for foldables, while ColorOS 15 from OPPO would need to prove its mettle in fluidity and app optimization within itself.

The Find N5 might be joining the ranks of other OPPO products because in Kenya, there is already availability for the OPPO Find X8. OPPO Kenya now has a wider collection of offerings in premium devices, but the Find N5 would help flesh out this lineup in the foldable section.

It would not be surprising if OPPO considers launching the device here given the growing interest among Kenyan consumers in foldable smartphones as it could also be an endorsement to position OPPO as a heavyweight competitor to the Galaxy Z Fold series in the region.

An official global launch event for the OPPO Find N5 has been planned for February 20.
