Kenya’s Hydrobox Secures Sh 1.16bn To Scale Mini Grids
Kenyan energy startup, Hydrobox, has taken a big step in its vision to revolutionise rural electrification after securing $9 million (Sh 1.16bn) in debt financing from FMO, the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank.
The funding targets to scale Hydrobox’s eight mini-grid projects in a bid to bring underserved communities affordable and sustainable energy.
As part of Hydrobox’s mission to electrify remote Kenyan communities and with a strong focus on scalability, the startup seeks to turn abundant water resources into a tool of transformation.
“With strong partners on board and a substantial pipeline of upcoming projects in Kenya and the DRC, we are well-positioned to make a meaningful impact on energy access across Africa,” Hydrobox CEO and co-founder Thomas Poelmans said.
Kenya’s energy landscape is evolving rapidly, however, rural electrification remains a challenge. According to the World Bank, only 50% of rural Kenyans have reliable access to electricity.
Hydrobox’s innovative mini-grids aim to tackle this head-on, disrupting the traditional grid system with a decentralized, sustainable alternative.
The startup noted that its IoT-driven approach sets it apart by monitoring and managing grids in real-time, thereby reducing downtime and maximising efficiency.
“These efforts align with Kenya’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes renewable energy and universal access to electricity,” Hydrobox said in a statement.
“Additionally, Hydrobox has a proven track record, with existing projects powering over 10,000 homes and small businesses. This USD 9 million boost will not only expand their reach but also strengthen Kenya’s position as a leader in green energy.”
The energy startup added that it is not only just lighting homes but also sparking opportunities.
“Access to affordable electricity transforms communities by enabling education, healthcare and entrepreneurship. Small businesses thrive with reliable power, while families enjoy safer, healthier living conditions,” the statement further read in part.
By combining hydroelectric power with IoT innovation, Hydrobox aims to set the stage for a sustainable energy future.
As these mini-grids expand, Kenya becomes a blueprint for other African nations aiming to bridge the energy gap. The ripple effect? A brighter, more connected continent powered by clean energy.
