Bolt Takes on Glovo with New Grocery Delivery Service in Kenya

Bolt has officially launched Bolt Market in Kenya,  its new grocery delivery service aimed at making everyday shopping more convenient.

Kenya becomes the first African country to experience this service, and comes three years after its initial launch in Bolt’s home country, Estonia.

With the launch, Bolt is taking on Glovo which was the most preferred platform for the delivery of groceries and food according to a recent survey by the Competition Authority (CAK) of Kenya.

“With the launch of Bolt Market grocery delivery in Kenya, we aim to better serve a thriving food and grocery ecosystem that is a foundation for a city people love to live in.’’ Bolt Food General Manager, Edgar Kitur said.

‘’Bolt Market offers a selection of over 1,500 carefully curated products, from fresh produce to household essentials. The store teams have no interruptions and handle products with care, making sure customers get the quality they would choose on their while saving their time.”

According to CAK, the Online food and grocery delivery market is an emerging market in Kenya. The Authority notes in its survey released in April this year that 9.3% of Kenyans are shopping for food and groceries online as of 2023; this is projected to rise to 16.7% by 2027, an equivalent of 10.5 million consumers.

The study attributes this rapid growth to the convenience and efficiency of online grocery shopping platforms. Factors like same-day and timed delivery options and buy-and-collect services are also expanding consumer choice and enhancing the overall experience.

Bolt says it is tapping into this market to offer customers a convenient way to access essentials. The move is part of Bolt’s strategy to expand its services, grow its market share, and establish itself as a trusted platform for convenient, on-demand grocery delivery.
