Vivo V40 In-depth Camera Review: Portrait Smartphone Camera King

Vivo V40 Camera Review: The Vivo V40 takes really good photos with its main and selfie cameras. I took over 1000 photos and videos with the Vivo V40 for this in-depth review.

The Vivo V40 is the company’s latest midrange smartphone, and we’ve already reviewed it, which you can read and watch. My focus in this article is a full, in-depth tour of how its cameras perform.

Vivo V40 is a premium flagship-style package with an attractive design featuring front and back glass. It has a 6.78-inch curved AMOLED screen with HDR10+ support, 120Hz refresh rate and 2.8K resolution, 4500 nits brightness, and IP68/69 ingress protection. It is powered by a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset coupled with 12GB onboard RAM, 12GB Extended RAM(Virtual) and 256GB storage. It has Android 14 and Funtouch 14 upgradeable to Android 15 and 16. A 5500mAh battery and 80W charging power it. Other features include an optical under-display fingerprint reader, and stereo speakers(top and bottom).

Vivo V40 has a new 50MP primary camera, a 50MP ultrawide(doubles as a macro), and a 50MP selfie camera. As its predecessor, you also get Auralight for low-light portraits but it is relatively smaller and brighter. The main camera has OIS support and rear and selfie cameras shoot 4K 30fps video.

Since 2020, Vivo has worked with Zeiss, initially with the flagship X60 series. This partnership extended to the midrange V series, with the V40 lineup, including the standard model, being the first to feature Zeiss professional-grade portrait photography.

With Zeiss optics in place for both main and selfie cameras, Vivo V40 has ZEISS Cinematic Portrait Video for an improved videography experience, with features like ZEISS Focus Transition, ZEISS Cinematic Video Bokeh, and ZEISS Style Bokeh. With all these, you have a lot of creative opportunities to play around with with the Vivo V40.

The Vivo V40 cameras are exactly what you want from a midrange smartphone and some more – I’m happy to report that there’s no other midrange that will top this one, especially regarding smartphone camera performance. The phone takes photos fast, it’s really good in low light and even better when taking pictures during the day. It also nails it as a portrait shooter. You have the flexibility when switching between the Zeiss portrait styles like Biotar, Sonnar, Planar, Distagon, and Cinematic. Besides this, we have additional modes like Night, Portrait, Micromovie, Supermoon, Live Photo, Snapshot, SuoerMacro, and Astro mode. The Portrait lens kit also has options like 24mm landscape portrait, 35mm street portrait, 50mm natural portrait, and 50mm classic portrait.

The results speak for themselves. The colours, the contrast, the vibrancy, the detail, the shadows, and the bokeh are outstanding even in low light. Every shot is worth sharing with friends and family on social media. You’ll be taking endless photos and videos with the Vivo V40.
