Competition for Tri-Fold Smartphones Intensifies

Tri-Fold smartphones: The foldables market is maturing with smartphone makers announcing their versions in the clamshell and bookstyle formats. With companies rushing to make their foldable even thinner and pack them with the latest tech, the new frontier waiting to be charted is putting three screens on them and the race is already heating up.

In the world of foldable, there is always space for innovation, and smartphone companies are adding triple screens to their devices. Larger screens add the benefit of having more screen real estate to enable you to do more. As a lover of bookstyle foldables, I am excited about the tri-fold designs and it looks like we won’t have to wait years for them to be available for purchase.

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design

Huawei will unveil their tri-fold device – the Mate XT Ultimate Design later next week(10th September) and we’ve already seen teasers online. The company is calling the device its “most leading, innovative, and disruptive product” yet.

The Mate XT is as thin as regular bi-folds and could open up to become a 10-inch tablet that will be the largest size. The foldable will have visible creases and a small selfie camera from pictures seen online. It is still unknown how thick it will be when folded and we’ll have to wait for the official reveal.

TECNO Phantom Ultimate 2

While the company is preparing to launch its second-gen foldables – the Phantom V Fold2 and V Flip2- later this year, they are already working on a triple-screen foldable called the Phantom Ultimate 2.

The phone can unfold to a 10-inch OLED screen from the regular 6.48-inch size, thus an extended display that supports multiwindow mode. This screen sports a 4:3 aspect ratio and 1620 by 2880 pixel resolution. TECNO says that their phone is the first foldable spotting TDDI technology. With its dual hinge mechanism, the phone’s thinness comes to 11mm when closed and they minimize the creases. The company says that the phone can withstand 300,000 folds.

The slim size also means we get a thin battery cover at 0.25mm. The three-screen design allows the phone to be used in laptop and tent modes.

It is still being determined when TECNO will launch this foldable as it is still in the concept stage.

OPPO

OPPO is also working on a tri-fold concept phone as well. It has the same design as the two above featuring one screen that you can fold into three. The screen is bezel-less and according to the picture, it has a large taskbar and widgets. Strangely enough, we see Apple’s iOS icons on the phone.

Very little is known about the rest of its hardware.

I am excited about the prospect of tri-fold smartphones and we’ll see how Huawei’s Mate Ultimate will be perceived after its launch on Tuesday next week and if it will set precedence for the rest of the tech companies to follow.
