Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 are now official – Here is how much they will cost you


Samsung just announced the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5, its next-generation devices with folding screens. The devices were unveiled on Wednesday at an event in the company’s home country of South Korea. 

Announced alongside the new foldable smartphones are a water-resistant Tab S9 tablet and some Galaxy Watches. 

In Kenya, Samsung’s local office hosted a viewing party at Shamba Café in Loresho Nairobi.

Should you really be excited about the new foldable phones? Well, both the  Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 share a few common features with their predecessors the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4.

The Galaxy Z Fold5 has received some significant refinement. It comes with 12GB of RAM and 1TB of onboard storage while the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has 8GB of RAM with up to 512GB of inbuilt storage. They both run Android 13-based OneUI 5.1.1 out-of-the-box.

The primary display on the fold is a 7.6-inch QXGA+ (2,176 x 1,812 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex panel while the outer screen has a 6.2-inch full-HD+ (2,316 x 904 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, both with refresh rates of up to 120Hz. Samsung has on the other hand added Meanwhile a 6.7-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,640 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex panel on the inside of the Galaxy Z Flip5 sports and a bigger 3.4-inch Super AMOLED folder-shaped cover screen.

When it comes to the cameras, the Galaxy Z Fold5 features a triple rear camera unit comprising a 50-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens, a 12-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens and a 10-megapixel sensor with a telephoto sensor. There is a centre-aligned punch-hole slot at the top of the outer display that houses a 10-megapixel sensor for selfies and video calls and a 4-megapixel under-display camera placed beneath the inner panel. The Galaxy Z Flip 5, on the other hand, carries two 12-megapixel rear camera sensors and a 10-megapixel selfie sensor.

Samsung has added a 4,400mAh battery with 25W wired, Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 and Wireless PowerShare support on the Galaxy Z Fold5 while the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is backed by a 3,700mAh battery with similar charging capacities.

The two foldables also feature  a wider variety of recycled materials than their previous generations, including pre-consumer recycled glass and aluminum and post-consumer recycled plastics, sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Even the paper used for their packaging box is made using 100 per cent recycled material. Samsung says these innovations have also been purposefully designed for optimized longevity. 

Each device comes with five years of security updates and four generations of OS upgrades.

Availability 

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 will be available for pre-order in select markets including Kenya from July 26, with general availability starting August 11th.

Galaxy Z Fold5 is available in Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream along with a variety of cases that offer practicality and style including a Slim S Pen Case, Clear Gadget Case, Eco-Leather Case, and a Standing Case with Strap.

  • Galaxy Z Flip5 – KES 193,000
  • Galaxy Z Fold5 – KES 325,000
