SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD Review

SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD Review: In my line of work as a tech journalist and tech review editor at TechTrends Media, I tend to work with very large files. What this means is that I am always in need of massive portable storage and as much as I might have so many options, they are always not just enough.

With options, I am talking about my phone which these days come with storage of up to even 512GB storage or even a USB stick. But do these options offer me speed and portability, which are very important to me? – That is where the solid-state drive (SSD) comes in.

In this brief review article, we will be talking about one of these SDDs, the SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD which was sent to us by the good people at Western Digita about a week ago.

SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD Design

SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD Review

I have an old hard drive that comes in one of those old-school black box and the standard design we are used to.

The SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD however comes with a very eye-catching golden-orange strip around the sides and on the inside of the top-corner notch which looks pretty interesting. The rest of the SSD has this nice black super rugged and sturdy forged aluminium body. Coated and wrapped in a durable silicon rubber coating, the SSD is able to withstand accidental drops and impacts while at the same time protectcing it from the elements.

The SSD also features an IP55 rating we highlighted in the specs earlier for both water and dust resistance, this makes it the perfect and convenient travel and work solution for your data storage needs while on the move.

Features and Performance

The SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD comes in 1 TB, 2TB, and 2TB capacities. It’s incredibly portable, weighing just around 77 grams, and easily fits in the palm of your hand or your pocket. So whether you’re a content creator or photographer, or simply need extra storage for your work or personal files, this SSD won’t weigh you down.

Included in the package along with the drive are two USB cables allowing for USB-C to USB-C data transfer or USB-C to USB-A usage. This means you can easily connect it to a wide range of devices, including cameras, laptops, desktops, and even some smartphones and tablets. It’s incredibly versatile.

SanDisk claims transfer speeds of up to 2000 MB/s read and write for this SSD which I find quite impressive. We tested this and well, the write speeds are incredibly fast and if you’re used to the normal USB Portable HDDs, you will actually notice this.  It worked perfectly as an expanded storage device during my recent trip to Guangzhou, China with my M1 MacBook Air. But again, the actual performance that you get will also depend on your computer and the connection that you use.

An important thing to note is – You can password-protect the drive with 256-bit hardware encryption as the SSD comes pre-loaded with a free copy of SanDisk SecureAccess™.

Should you buy the Extreme PRO Portable SSD?
