HMD Global launching three Nokia feature phones and a tablet in Kenya this month
There was a time when Nokia led the way as other brands followed. During the early days of mobile phone communication in Kenya, Nokia played a central role, providing relatively affordable phones that were easily recognizable and enviably durable. The iconic Nokia 3310 still rings a bell.
Several years later, Nokia’s prominence faded as a result of several factors, chief among them the rise of brands that became more aggressive and now dominate the Kenyan market.
Nokia has, however, continued to specialize in feature phones (kambambe) still promising the good old features that made the brand so popular.
The company, now under HMD Global has announced the arrival of three new feature phones and a tablet into the Kenyan market.
The devices going on sale in September include the Nokia 8210 4G, Nokia 2660 Flip, Nokia 5710 XpressAudio and Nokia T10 Tablet.
Florian Seiche, CEO, HMD Global says that in spite of the high penetration of smartphones across markets, its iconic range of feature phones is “gaining momentum.”
“Classic Nokia heritage is combined with innovation in our feature phone portfolio. This iconic range is gaining momentum as your trusted companion for all your communication needs. At the same time, we have brought our signature longevity promises to the tablet market.”
The introduction of the new models is a demonstration that Nokia is still focused on making phones accessible and affordable for everyone. The company hopes that continued change in consumer behaviour which has seen a resurgence of the 90s culture will help boost the performance of its feature phones in the market.
