Government unveils new digital number plates

..it will cost you KES 3,000 to get them.

The government on Tuesday unveiled the new generation of digital number plates featuring a number of security features.

The plates were unveiled by outgoing Interior CS Fred Matiangi at the GSU Recce unit Headquarters in Ruiru, Nairobi. They feature inbuilt security features that allow law enforcement agencies to trace car ownership. This the CS says is part of measures to guarantee security against plate duplication.

“We are doing this because we want to address the security of our country” he said.

Matiangi noted that the digital number plates will also help other agencies such as the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) function properly and urged Kenyans to acquire them from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

The plates comply with the amended Traffic Act of 2016 and will cost motorists KES 3,000 to replace their old plates with new ones. Motorists have been given 18 months to do so.

Transport CS James Macharia who also attended the launch said the new plates will cover 12 category of vehicles in line with the legal notice 62 of 2016. It will also allow ease of monitoring vehicles coming into the country that ranks as a major transit hub in the region.
