Safaricom Has The Fastest Internet speeds In Kenya Followed By Airtel, Report


According to a report ranking internet speeds across the country, Safaricom’s internet has the fastest download speeds among the top five performers, followed by Airtel, Faiba and Telkom in that order.

Safaricom’s internet has a median download speed of 22.74 Mbps, while Airtel downloads at an average 15.71Mbps, Faiba at 14.08 Mbps and Telkom is the lowest ranking at an average 4.71 Mbps.

“In measuring the consistency of each operator’s performance, we found that Safaricom had the highest Consistency in Kenya during Q2 2022, with 82.4% of results showing at least a 5 Mbps minimum download speed and 1 Mbps minimum upload speed.” The report says.

The report was provided by speedtest.com a product developed by Ookla, a global leader in testing fixed broadband and mobile network. Ookla has its headquarters in Seattle, WA with additional offices in Dublin, Ireland.

In addition, Mombasa, had the best download speed at  23.59 Mbps and upload speeds at 13.14 followed by Kisumu, Nairobi, Eldoret and Nakuru respectively.

Across the African continent, there have been concerted efforts to improve internet connectivity and speeds as economies aim to take advantage of the digital space.

In Kenya, government-owned enterprises including Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) and Kenya Power have ventured into the provision of internet services. The companies aim to take advantage of their nationwide infrastructure to provide last-mile internet connectivity that’s faster and more affordable.
