TikTok’s new feature will remind users to take a break from the app

Part of the unsettled debate about social media is the amount of time that people spend scrolling through endless loads of data.

TikTok, one of the world’s fastest-rising social media platforms is heeding the call to regulate time spent on the app by users. The social media platform plans to introduce features encouraging user to take a break from endlessly scrolling short-form videos.

In a blog post, TikTok said it will introduce a set of well-being features that allow users to customize the time limits they intend to use the app before getting a reminder to take a break.

“These prompts will remind people to take a break after a certain amount of uninterrupted screen time, which they can set as they choose,” Jordan Furlong, a product manager of digital well-being at TikTok wrote in the blog post. The company says the prompt will carry the message: “Break reminders help you feel more mindful and balanced on TikTok.”

Previously, users would be informed if they spent more than 40, 60, 90 or 120 minutes on the app per day, but the company thinks this can be improved by issuing more customized prompts.

The new feature will further give users access to summaries of daily time spent on the platform, the number of times they opened the app and a breakdown of daytime and nighttime usage. There are also options for weekly notifications to help their screen time dashboard.

Younger users aged between 13 and 17 years will be issued with “digital well-being prompts” once they clock more than 100 minutes on a single day.

“We hope these new digital well-being tools continue to support our community in fostering a positive relationship with TikTok. We will continue to invest in protecting the well-being of people so that our community can feel in control of their TikTok experience and empowered to express their creativity, make meaningful connections and enjoy culture-defining entertainment.” Furlong wrote.
