“In the last months, businesses all over the world have had their boundaries pushed by the COVID-19 pandemic towards digital transformation,” said Bernard Njoroge, Founder and MD of Adrian Kenya speaking to the webinar initiative. “Today every company large or small has to be technology-enabled in order to thrive. To ensure that Kenyan businesses and entrepreneurs continue to be at the fore of innovation, we must open up the conversation and engage candidly.”
Looking at the impact of technology on businesses on of the panels tackled the topic “How Businesses can Leverage the Fourth Industrial Revolution” featuring renowned ICT champion Dr. Bitange Ndemo and Nekesa Were, the Director of Strategy of pan-African organization Afrilabs, moderated by Adrian’s Corporate Communications Manager, Charity Murigi.
Panelists emphasized the need for businesses to consider the digital customer with Nekesa Were, the Director of Strategy at Afrilabs and former MD of iHub urging business leaders present to “Understand that quality matters and the user experience matters. According to the 2020 Future of Jobs report by the World Economic Forum Future, looking at global statistics, by 2025 85 million jobs may be displaced by a shift in the division of labor between humans and machines, while 97 million new roles may emerge that are more adapted to the new division of labor between humans, machines and algorithms.
The “Future Trends for Digital Jobs” panel addressed these concerns looking at the implication for jobs specifically in the Kenyan context in an environment already ravaged by COVID induced layoffs. The panel took insights from Perminus Wainaina MD of Corporate Staffing, Nelly Agyemang-Gyamfi the Country Director of Moringa School, Benson Kinoti Developer Training Projects Manager at Google and, Agnes Muthoni the Director of Partnerships at Andela.
Panellists emphasized on the need for employees to gain digital skills not to get the next job but for survival as they can also position one for self-employment. There was also a call to learn advanced digital skills and for companies to offer support in reskilling or upskilling their employees.
