Latest Feature in Windows 10 Update Helps Fix Chrome’s Appetite for Memory

Google’s Chrome browser has long been known for its notorious appetite for RAM. Chrome’s memory hogging behaviour has made it one of the gold standards to see how fast a laptop can run when under memory workload.

Memory usage on Chrome has been a serious issue although Google has been trying to fix it in the past.

But thank God Microsoft came through and they want to save us on this. Windows 10 May 2020 Update is bringing segment heap memory improvements to help cut down memory usage by Win32 apps.

SegmentHeap memory management is an improvement on the legacy heap functionality. Microsoft’s early tests on a modified Chromium-based Edge browser resulted in a 27 percent reduction in memory use.

Google is all-in on this idea and wants to adopt the same for its memory-hogging browser, Chrome. The company says the feature “could save hundreds of MB in the browser and Network Service utility processes, among others.”

Before you get too pumped about this; Google says actual results will vary widely. But, “the greatest savings coming on many-core machines.” It reiterates what Microsoft spoke about the same but regardless of the actual performance, this is a great move.

The segment heap feature is available on the latest Windows 10 version 2004 and newer. However, a bit of a bummer is that it’s up to various app developers to enable it.

For Google Chrome it’s not yet available but the company will bring it in the future.

The ball is now on your court Google, bring it on.
