Kenya Has Been Ranked Among Countries With The Lowest Internet Costs in Africa
Internet costs in Africa are increasingly getting lower as time passes by. Kenya, as of now, is at a good spot being among the countries with the lowest internet costs in Africa. This is according to a research report “1GB Basket Statistics” from Research ICT Africa.
In Africa, Egypt ranks first with the lowest data costs, with 1GB going for an average of Ksh 121. Tunisia and Mozambique follow Egypt at the second and third positions with a gigabyte of data going for Ksh 178 and Ksh 197, respectively.
In East Africa, Tanzania is the leader with the lowest average internet costs. Generally, the region ranks well compared to other African countries, with Tanzania at Ksh 218, followed by Rwanda at Ksh 220, Kenya at Ksh 244, Uganda at Ksh 273, and Burundi Ksh 302, as of September 2019.
This has ensured that Est African countries have grabbed the fourth, fifth, seventh, ninth, and eleventh spot in the list of Africa’s lowest data prices, respectively.
Notably, there are still some African countries with very high data costs – surprisingly, way more – up to 20x – than the average daily spends of most Africans. Considering the average daily spend of most Africans is less than Ksh 100, you’ll agree that current data prices are still very high, even in Kenya.
Swaziland, now known as eSwatini, leads the pack in this category with a gigabyte of data going for an average of Ksh 2,139.
Zimbabwe ranks second at Sh2,000, Seychelles at Ksh 1787, Guinea-Bissau at Ksh 1,695 while Chad ranks fifth charging an average of Sh1,187 per gigabyte of data, as of Q3 2019.
Looking at Africa’s highest data prices, these figures are still high, but there has been a substantial reduction in costs compared to previous years, according to the report.
The report included 45 out of Africa’s 53 nations, failing to capture details on the data prices in eight countries, including Comoros, Liberia, Mali, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, and Eritrea.
