Qualcomm’s New Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC is Optimized Gaming and VR

Qualcomm has announced a new chip aimed at boosting its high-end SoC, SDM 855 with a more powerful CPU. The new chip is majorly aimed at phone users who value CPU speed and will dearly love the new chip for its improved performance when it comes to gaming on mobile.

The new Snapdragon 855 Plus consists of 8 Qualcomm® Kryo™ 485 CPUs clocking up to 2.96Ghz, which is a boost from 2.84GHz in the SDM 855. Also the new chip boats an Adreno™ 640 GPU which delivers a 15% boost in gaming over the standard Snapdragon 855. Qualcomm has indicated their new chip will offer an Elite gaming experience thanks to the Adreno GPU and Qualcomm® aptX™ Audio alongside Qualcomm Aqstic™ audio technologies which are designed to deliver premium audio with real-time surround sound.

Plus, Qualcomm has also enhanced AI capabilities in the chip, stating the new chip is three times more powerful than the Snapdragon 845. Snapdragon 855 Plus is also your go-to solution for all things AR and VR, but don’t expect it to support 5G. For 5G support, the built-in X24 LTE modem has to be swapped with the Qualcomm X50 5G modem that supports both 5G standards (5G mmWave and sub-6 GHz).

Other features that the new chips bring on board include 4K Ultra HD display, Dual 22MP or 48MP camera or a single camera up to 192MP.  The new chip also supports 720 HD Slow motion video capture at 480 frames per second.

It seems we won’t be waiting long before the chip hits the market as the company has stated the new chip is expected to power smartphones as early as this year. ASUS has been the first manufacturer to embrace the new chip promising it will be the main driver in their upcoming ASUS ROG Phone II.

This comes weeks after Qualcomm revamped their entry-level chip with a new 215 Mobile platform. Seems Qualcomm is now stepping its game on both ends to tackle the increasing MediaTek appetite for its chip glory.
