Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 Quick Thoughts

Huawei unveiled the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 in Kenya a few weeks ago. There was a media launch which we covered here. Pre-orders were then opened until February 13th before the device officially went on Sale in the country.

I have been using the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 for around two weeks now. We did the unboxing video for you which you can check here. In this article, I will just be sharing some of the exciting things about the device.

The Y7 Prime 2019 is a good device and is yet another attempt by Huawei to stay in touch with the mid-range smartphone market in Kenya. The market continues to grow and each smartphone market is really making an attempt to capture it with the recent one being India’s Lava which unveiled a number of devices in the country just the other day.

Let’s talk about design and Display:

The Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 comes with a 6.26-inch Dewdrop display. Remember the HUAWEI Dewdrop Display—first debuted with the flagship HUAWEI Mate 20 Series and lends itself to great viewing experiences thanks to its top class screen-to-body ratio of 86.7 per cent. The pearl-shaped notch houses the 16MP front camera and is also Huawei’s smallest notch to date.

The rounded edges and the display plus the display actually makes the device look bigger than it actually is.

The back side houses the Dual AI cameras, flash and the fingerprint scanner which is actually really fast.  On the left side, you have the sim card holder while the left houses the volume rockers and the power button.

At the bottom, you have the speakers and the USB port. As I mentioned in my Unboxing video, a downside of the design is the lack of a USB-C port. If you were expecting the phone to feature it then you might be a bit disappointed. USB-C is now becoming a necessity as most smartphone users now want fast charging. Anyway, Huawei does not lose much here considering other competitors in the same price range have also not embraced USB-C.

The device comes in three colours; Aurora Blue, Midnight Black, Coral Red. We had the Coral Red which actually looks really nice.

The cameras

The camera is one of the Key selling points of the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019. You’re getting a 13-megapixel (f/1.8) primary camera and a 2-megapixel (f/2.4) secondary camera on the rear and a 16-megapixel front shooter for selfies.

The photo output is really decent, great photos especially with the AI impact. With AI, the camera is also able to recognise 22 different scenes, like food, vehicles, sunrise. You can actually see the AI in action when you point the camera at your subject, which is really impressive.

Specs, Performance and Battery

Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 is powered by a 1.8GHz processor and it comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 512GB via a microSD card. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo and of course, you know we all wish it came with Android Pie. It is powered by a 4000mAh. The device is also a Dual-SIM smartphone that accepts Nano-SIM and Nano-SIM. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. Sensors on the phone include Face unlock.

Well, with 3GB RAM and Snapdragon 450 chipset the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 boasts of a good performance level and the EMUI 8.2 skin certainly supplements the Android Oreo software pretty well and gives you a number of options on how you would want to customize your device. I also need to mention that Huawei also included a Face recognition feature. Overall, the performance as a whole on the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 is.

The battery life is also quite impressive. Probably one of my best features on the phone. On a single charge, the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 lasts two days, no other smartphone has offered me that.

Part is what is contributing to this battery life is the AI power saving technology. What the AI basically does is monitor your phone’s battery consumption and shut down apps running in the background that you haven’t touched for a while. It will also adjust your phone’s brightness based on your habits.
