Keri Hilson to mentor Airtel Trace Music Star Season 2


Renowned American vocalist and songwriter Keri Hilson will spearhead the 2nd edition of ‘’Airtel Trace Music Star’’ (ATMS).

Now in its second season, this year’s Airtel TRACE Music Star competition will see Niger join Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zambia as the newest African territories to enter this year’s competition. The best singing talent in each territory will be identified, rewarded and put in competition to run for the title of best African music talent.

This announcement was made today during a press launch followed by a star-studded party was well attended by top celebrities and influential people in the music and art industries including Sauti Sol, ATMS season 1 winner Benjamin Webi, Phillis (Phy), Atemi Diva, Wyre, Chris Adwar- the three who are part of the judging panel for season 2.  

“We are pleased to partner with TRACE to bring to you season two of the Airtel TRACE Music Star where we are once again providing an exciting platform for Kenyan youth to showcase their talent in Africa’s “coolest” music competition. This underscores our commitment to creating platforms that celebrate and reward young, talented people.” Airtel Kenya CEO Adil El Youssefi said.

On his part, TRACE TV’s Senior Vice President for Eastern Africa Steve Agutu said, “Last year the competition received 2.3 million calls into the dedicated telephone line. We are indeed delighted to partner with Airtel and leverage our knowledge of the music industry for the launch of Season 2 which will be bigger and even better.”

Without having to stand in big long queues, all that participants have to do is use an Airtel line to Call, Sing and Win a chance to become the next big music star in Kenya and possibly across Africa and the world.  To participate, one will need to call in the number-0900 733 733 with their mobile phones, record their songs to stand a chance to become the next big music star in Africa. The grand finale will be held in Lagos in June this year.  

The partnership kicked off on 6th April with the launch of the Airtel Trace Music Star competition which will run until 11h June 2016. The competition is only open to Airtel subscribers. Numbers ported to Airtel will however also be eligible for entry.  

The Kenyan winner stands a chance to win Ksh 1.5Mat the Kenya finale and thereafter, qualifies to compete in the grand finale where the ultimate prize comprises a mentorship program with multi-award winning American singer-songwriter Keri Hilson in Atlanta. The winner will not only star in their own music video alongside Keri Hilson; he/she will get an opportunity to record a duet with the “Knock You Down” songstress, as well as receive a signed contract with a major music label and worldwide media exposure through various TRACE’s platforms.

Also, the first and second runners up will take home an iPhone 6s Plus Kes 100,000 and the 3rd winner will be taking home a Samsung 6 Edge and a Cash prize of Ksh 50,000.

In Season one of the competition, Benjamin Webi was crowned as the winner of the Airtel TRACE Music Star competition, Kenya edition. The fiercely contested finale, which garnered a record viewership, saw Phillis Mwihaki come in at a close second with Trina Mungai bagging the third position.

Benjamin Webi took home the first prize of over (Euro 25,000) in cash and an iPhone 6 Plus, while Phillis who came in at a close second took home Kshs. 100,000 and an iPhone 6 Plus. Trina Mungai wrapped up the top three with a cash prize of Kshs. 50,000 and an iPhone 6
