Airtel Kenya Board last weekend hosted the Senate committee on Education, Information and Technology at Airtel Kenya HQ offices, ahead of debate on anti-competitive behaviour regulations slated for next week.

Lead by the Airtel’s chairman Board of Directors Dr. Titus Naikuni and CEO Adil El Youssefi, the board briefed the committee on the company’s position in the market, of course this comes after the different wars that have been going on between Safaricom and Airtel.

The Senate committee was also briefed on the company’s commitment to implement new strategies that ensure Kenyans continue to obtain more value from the Airtel network.

CEO Adil El Youssefi also briefed the Senate committee on the challenges facing the company even as it continues investing in the country. Adil focused on aspects of infrastructure sharing between operators and dominant player’s mobile money platform and anti-competitive tactics in the market place. The CEO said that the company is hopeful that the regulators and the Government will step in to create a level playing field in the industry.

On his part, the Senate committee chairman  Hon. Mutahi Kagwe noted that there is something unique about Kenya’s telecommunication industry as far as market dominance is concerned. Hon. Kagwe noted that the meeting with the board helped the committee to better understand Airtel’s position in the market, saying that it’s the legislature is concerned about the challenges facing the sector and would soon act to address them.

The chairman said that there is need to relook at the telecommunication industry with an aim of creating a conducive environment for all players just like its been done in other parts of the continent and the world.
