Google has launched its cloud messaging service for iOS devices that will allow applications to communicate using push notifications. Earlier, the service was available for Android devices only but the new update will allow developers to expand the reach of their applications to iOS devices too.

The feature allows users to decide the important ‘topics’ within the application and receive the relevant notifications. For instance, in a news application the user can select a topic like ‘Technology’ and the application will be able to send push notifications to the user.

The addition of iOS support will prove to be a good incentive for cross-platform developers. The developers won’t have to invest in creating a separate infrastructure to deal with the important topics. The feature is now available across most major operating systems.

The search giant announced Android M in the Google I/O event yesterday and also unveiled a host of new changes in the operating system. The final version of the operating system should reach the final stage by the end of this year.
