Oscars ‘selfie’ hits over a million retweets and crushes twitter
The 86th Oscars Awards host Ellen DeGeneres selfie has broken a world record after becoming the World’s most retweeted photo with 3, 108, 562 retweets as at 6.06 AM on 3rd March.
The photo showed DeGeneres along with Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, Jared Leto and Kevin Spacey. It single-handedly managed a rare feat – breaking the record for most retweets and also leading to crush of DeGeneres twitter handle.
The photo captioned as “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars”, DeGeneras had stated before the show started that she wanted to break a record of the most retweeted selfie and true to her word, she did it.
The selfie’s millions of retweets by the star’s 27.4 million followers easily beat out the previous title holder, of a photo showing President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle’s tittled “four more years” at the point of his re-election in November 2012, which received 781,436 retweets.
The tweet also beat other retweets in 2013 which included death announcement of Cory Monteith which got 394,000 retweets and the death of Paul Walker which also hit 389,000 retweets.
The selfie reached 779, 295 retweets approximately half an hour after it was posted and within an hour DeGeneres tweet had reached a million retweets and before the show was over the retweets stood at 2, 070, 132 retweets.
The record-breaking tweet was only one of many posted by the Oscar’s host. She posted several additional selfies with various Oscar winners taken backstage. Which ended up recording over 100 thousand retweets.
The outage was also noted by Twitter in a post. “ Between 19:05 and 19:29 PST today, some users may have experienced issues viewing and sending Tweets on twitter.com and Twitter’s mobile apps.Traffic was redirected away from the components that were experiencing problems, and the issue has now been resolved.We apologize for any inconvenience.”
Meanwhile Samsung who were the official sponsors for the Oscars Awards offered a dollar for every retweet of the pic and later on gave out their Samsung Galaxy note S3 devices to all the audience attending TheEllen Show last night
