Samsung Starts Mass Production of 5G and AI –Ready 12GB LPDDR5 DRAM Chips

The speed of processors and CPU in mobile phones is being improved now and then, and ensuring the faster CPUs are fully utilised, we need faster DRAM chips, too. To meet the consumer demand for faster smartphones in the near future, Samsung has already started mass production of the AI and 5G –ready12GB LPDDR5 chips. The new chip –as Samsung states –will enable “5G and AI features in future smartphones.”

LPDDR5 offers up to 5500Mbps data rates which is a nearly 30% increase over the LPDDR4X DRAM chips used in flagship devices currently –including those 5G powered phones –which offers data rates up to 4,266Mbps. In theory, the new chips can be able to transfer 44GB of data in only a second.

LPDDR5 is made using the latest 10-nm class manufacturing technology. Besides, the new fifth-generation chip will support ultra-high-definition video recording together with machine learning that will highly optimise on battery usage.

With improved clocking speeds, thanks to the new circuit design, the new chip delivers up to 30% power savings at the same time maintaining stable performance speeds.

Expect the new LPDDR5 chips to feature in smartphones in two memory modules –6GB/12GB chips majorly in 2020. Plus, the company also hopes they will push the industry edge by producing the 8GB and 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM chips by next year.
