Raspberry Pi Foundation Releases New Pi 4 Computer with 8GB of RAM

In 2019, Raspberry released new iterations to the world’s low-cost Pi computers going at $55. Almost a year later, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has updated its Raspberry Pi 4 Model B by doubling the memory from 4GB to 8GB. The new iteration sells at $75.

Raspberry Pi Foundation says they intended to have 8GB variants of the Pi 4 along with the 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB variants released last year but they faced some technical issues – lack of an 8GB LPDDR4 package in a form that they could use.

The company says they have also done enormous work on the software side to ensure you get the most out of the added memory. Raspberry is now making a big leap to take its Raspbian operating system to the 64-bit userland. The OS is currently under beta. The company has also announced a change in the name of its OS from Raspbian to Raspberry Pi OS.

“As our community grows, we want to make sure it’s as easy as possible for new users to find our recommended operating system for Raspberry Pi. We think the new name will help more people feel confident in using our computers and our software,” wrote Raspberry Foundation in a blog post.

They have also tweaked a few things on the original Raspberry Pi 4 board – the power supply components have been shuffled. However, the exterior is pretty similar to last year’s Pi 4.

The company says they have sold nearly 3 million units of Pi 4 since the first release in June 2019.
