Being the social media giant of this era, Facebook also wants to reduce dependence on other companies and competitors as well. The company has also eyed a share in the hardware market but now want to create their own path in this.

According to a report, Facebook wants to build its own operating system from scratch to reduce its reliance on Google’s Android.

The development of the new Operating System will be led by Mark Lucovsky, a co-author of the Windows NT operating system.

“We really want to make sure the next generation has space for us,” Facebook’s head of hardware, Andrew Bosworth, told The Information.

“We don’t think we can trust the marketplace or competitors to ensure that’s the case. And so we’re gonna do it ourselves.”

Currently, both Facebook’s Oculus and Portal devices run on a modified version of Android.

Aside from this Oculus and Portal, Facebook is also working on its AR glasses codenamed codenamed “Orion.” The company’s head of hardware, Andrew Bosworth says they could arrive as early as 2023.

In response to TechCrunch, the company said it is primarily focusing on what will be used on its AR glasses. As of now, Facebook is still trying to figure things out. They can build a custom OS specifically for augmented reality or even potentially partner with other companies.

This is, however, not the first time Facebook has considered building an operating system for itself. The company’s last attempt did not go well. Instead of creating a new OS, the company created a forked version of Android.

Facebook is seemingly taking Apple’s approach to building its own hardware and software. Earlier this year reports surfaced on the working on its own custom chip hardware. The company has even confirmed that it is working on a voice assistant for Facebook Portal and Oculus products.
