Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Anwar Soussa is leaving the company after two years
After being appointed to lead the Safaricom-Led consortium operations in Ethiopia in July 2021, Anwar Soussa now leaving the company.
According to a statement, the Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia CEO will be departing the telco effective 31st July 2023 once his secondment comes to an end.
Anwar joined Safaricom Ethiopia to lead the organisation’s establishment, set up business operations and roll out a high-quality network in the country. His appointment came a month after Ethiopia’s telecommunications regulator awarded an operating license to a consortium led by Kenya’s Safaricom and Japan’s Sumitomo.
As the first CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, Anwar has overseen attainment of significant milestones in a highly dynamic environment, including onboarding the team and successfully launching commercial operations of the second telecommunications operator in Ethiopia.
Anwar has steered Safaricom Ethiopia to acquire over 4 million customers, with the network now covering more than 25% of the population and spread across 50 cities/towns.
Under Anwar’s leadership, Safaricom Ethiopia also secured a mobile financial services licence, paving the way to launch M-PESA services.

Throughout his tenure, he has demonstrated unwavering passion and commitment, which have played a crucial role in our achievements thus far. We will announce Anwar’s successor in due course.’’ Peter Ndegwa, Chief Executive Officer Safaricom said in a statement.
‘’I wish Anwar the best in his future endeavours as his assignment with Safaricom Ethiopia ends.’’ he added.
Safaricom Ethiopia has also not revealed who will take over his position.
