Rwanda Launches Food Innovation Hub to Benefit Farmers

Rwanda has announced a strategic partnership to develop a Rwanda Food Innovation Hub, which aims to catalyze sustainable food systems across Africa.
The Food Innovation Hub seeks to empower smallholder farmers, develop inclusive markets and finance, and strengthen agricultural systems. As a result, these efforts will increase food production, improve nutrition, and enhance resilience to climate change.
Moreover, the partnership aligns with Rwanda’s national development priorities by addressing economic growth and poverty reduction through technology, communication, and innovation. At the same time, it supports AGRA’s 2022-2030 Strategic Framework, which applies a food systems lens to achieve zero hunger, improve nutrition, reduce poverty, and promote climate adaptation.
During the signing of the MoU, Dr. Agnes Kalibata, President of AGRA, emphasized AGRA’s commitment to sustainable food systems across Africa. She stated, “This collaboration with MINICT will create a vibrant ecosystem for food innovation in Rwanda, benefiting farmers and communities throughout the continent.”
Similarly, Paula Ingabire, Minister of ICT, highlighted the importance of leveraging technology for food security. She remarked, “This partnership with AGRA is crucial for Rwanda’s ambition to become a Food Innovation Hub. By leveraging technology and innovation, we can transform our food systems, empower our farmers, and contribute to food security across Africa.”
What the MoU Entails
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes a framework for collaboration to position Rwanda as a leading Food Innovation Hub. Specifically, the framework fosters an ecosystem that encourages, accelerates, and scales food systems innovations to achieve key development goals.
As part of this initiative, AGRA will provide strategic advisory services, participate as a key partner in the initiative’s Steering Committee, and collaborate with national, regional, and global actors. Furthermore, it will help position the initiative effectively and build strong partnerships.
Meanwhile, the Rwanda Ministry of ICT will take the lead in policy design and implementation, coordinate efforts with government ministries and agencies, and establish strategic partnerships. In addition, AGRA will offer advisory services, engage with key stakeholders at different levels, and help broker partnerships and programs.
